D2 GRADE SEASON 2023/24 REPORT

The D2 team had a very worthwhile season. Apart from six long-term adult players, no fewer than 15 boys, aged 14 to 16, alternated between the D2 and higher grades. The team was undefeated in its first seven matches but then lost its last six to finish sixth in the competition.

It was clear that the boys were much better at bowling than batting, perhaps because the rules of the Junior Competition are designed to give all eleven batsmen an equal opportunity making it almost impossible to make a sequence of good scores.

The leading wicket-takers were Ethan Tokic (9) and Patrick Moody ( but others, including Taye Chisholm, Cameron Gins, Nathan Zinsli and Tim Ball, bowled particularly well and, undoubtedly, will improve much next season.

Five juniors, Edward Goris (75*), Lachlan Mitchell (46*), Archie Robinson (40), Taj Foster (30) and Ethan Tokin (30, including 24 singles), played fine innings against much older bowlers.

Of the senior players Adam Warren (14), Stephen Tijou ( and Matthew Warren (6) were the most productive bowlers, but Geoff Silver (53* and 40) in two ‘guest appearances’ was the only one to make a score above 30.

Special thanks are due to Stephen Tijou who acted as team secretary. He looked after the administration for each match as well as entering the results in PlayHQ.

For me it was an unexpected pleasure to be asked to captain the team and to be able to seek to give all the players a “fair go”.
